Salterns Reach consists of five detached houses in an Arts & Crafts vernacular style. The houses are perfectly placed on the second row from the waterfront in Prinsted – a small, historic village in the heart of Chichester Harbour’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The site
This is a unique site. It had taken the owner 10 years to gain initial planning permission, making it the only development site permitted in Prinsted since the formation of the modern planning system. Realising how special the opportunity was, we persuaded the owner to sell the site to us.
Our solution
In our opinion, the approved designs didn’t do nearly enough to respond to the character of the village and the unique harbourside setting. We set about redesigning the plans, with different architecture and local materials, so that the new houses would sit harmoniously in this special location.
Design
We worked closely with Martin Critchell Architects to create bespoke designs for each individual property, all with an underlying Arts & Crafts influence. Varying roof heights and chimney styles, plus structural oak porches and projections, were among the architectural features contributing to the character of the buildings. In common with the range of housing found in many English villages, they varied in size from modest cottages to a substantial country house.
